For starters, make sure you are working with an interior designer, not an interior decorator: There is a difference. Interior designers, like Cathie Clark of Room With a View, who are certified by American Society of Interior Designers, have the education, experience and expertise to help create your perfect home.
You can search online for ASID-certified designers in your area or ask friends and colleagues who have worked with an interior designer for recommendations. Read about their education and experience, and explore their portfolio. If you feel like the designer might be a good fit for your project, schedule a call or meeting. Finding a designer who fully understands the scope of the project and has a personality that meshes with yours are critical to creating a design that not only impacts your life but also improves it.

Traditional, mid-century modern, farmhouse, transitional, and contemporary… there are seemingly endless interior design styles. Great design begins with a conversation.
The right designer will understand your needs and desires and bring them to life without imposing their personal or preferred style on you.

Remember, you are in the driver’s seat as far as final decisions. Typically, a designer will comb through swatches, finishes, paint chips, you name it, and cull the options to a manageable number before presenting them to you.
If you don’t like what you see, say so. After discussing which designs you like — and don’t like, your interior designer will use that information to put together another set of options.

Fabrics have come a long way over the years. Advanced technology has made them far more durable and easy to care for. But not all fabrics are the same.
Your interior designer will know which are most durable, as well as selecting pre-treated fabric that resist stains and odor, repel liquids, withstand fading and are sturdy enough for all the members of your family, human and not.
